Best for Heavy & Oversized Cargo

Machinery, generators and industrial equipment too large for a standard container.

Best for Infrastructure Projects

Project cargo for energy, construction and industrial builds, planned as one job instead of separate bookings.

Quick Answer

Out-of-gauge (OOG), breakbulk and project cargo shipping cover freight that's simply too big, heavy or awkwardly shaped for a standard container: generators, cranes, steel structures, industrial machinery, marine vessels. We ship out of Jebel Ali in Dubai and the Saudi ports into Africa, and out of China (Tianjin, Shanghai, Dalian, Lianyungang, Xingang, Qingdao, Shekou and Nansha) to ports across Africa, the Middle East, Europe, the Americas and beyond. Depending on the size and weight of what you're shipping, that could mean a flat rack container, an open top container, RoRo, or a dedicated breakbulk vessel.

Key Definitions

Understanding OOG, Breakbulk & Project Cargo Shipping

Three related but distinct freight terms — here's what each one means and when it applies to your shipment.

What Is Out-of-Gauge (OOG) Cargo?

If it doesn't fit inside a standard container's internal length, width or height, it's out-of-gauge. Construction equipment, industrial machinery, generators, transformers, steel structures — anything that size ends up on a flat rack, an open top container, or a breakbulk vessel instead of a normal 20ft or 40ft box.

What Is Breakbulk Shipping?

Breakbulk means the cargo goes on piece by piece: pallets, crates, or lashed straight to the vessel's deck or hold, instead of packed into a container. It's the standard method for heavy machinery, pipes and coils, and generally anything that's faster to load individually than to force into a box.

What Is Project Cargo Shipping?

Project cargo is less a shipping method and more a way of running the whole move. It's usually for infrastructure, energy or industrial builds, where one shipment might combine breakbulk, OOG, RoRo and standard containers — so the cargo surveys, route planning, customs paperwork and port handling all get managed as a single job instead of separate bookings.

When You Need It

Cargo That Needs OOG or Breakbulk Shipping

If your shipment falls into any of these categories, it likely won't fit inside a standard container and will need a breakbulk, flat rack, open top or RoRo solution:

Oversized cargo and vehicles needing breakbulk or RoRo shipping
  • Generators, transformers and turbines
  • Industrial machinery and processing equipment
  • Construction and mining equipment
  • Steel beams, pipes, coils and prefabricated structures
  • Yachts, boats and marine vessels
  • Wind turbine components and oil & gas modules
  • Vehicles and rolling stock too large for standard RoRo booking
  • Any cargo exceeding standard container dimensions or weight limits

We look at each shipment on its own, whether it's one oversized machine or a full project cargo job, and work out the most cost-effective way to move it: flat rack, open top, RoRo or breakbulk vessel.

Dimensions & Weight

When Does Cargo Become Out-of-Gauge?

A standard 40ft high-cube container has roughly 12 m (39.5 ft) of usable length, 2.35 m (7.7 ft) of width and 2.59 m (8.5 ft) of height, with a payload limit of about 26–28 tonnes. Cargo that exceeds any of these becomes out-of-gauge:

DimensionStandard Container LimitOut-of-Gauge When…
Length~12 m (39.5 ft)Longer than the container — needs flat rack or breakbulk vessel
Width~2.35 m (7.7 ft)Wider than 2.44 m (8 ft) — needs flat rack or breakbulk vessel
Height~2.59 m (8.5 ft)Taller than the container — needs open top or breakbulk vessel
Weight~26–28 tonnesHeavier loads need reinforced flat rack, RoRo or heavy-lift vessel
Shipping Methods

Equipment We Use for OOG & Breakbulk Cargo

Get the equipment wrong and oversized cargo gets damaged, delayed, or both. We match your cargo's shape, size and weight to the right loading method:

Flat rack container for out-of-gauge cargo
Best for over-width / over-height

Flat Rack Container

Collapsible sides allow crane loading from the top or sides — ideal for machinery, vehicles and steel structures wider or taller than a standard container.

Open top container for over-height cargo
Best for over-height cargo

Open Top Container

A removable tarpaulin roof allows crane loading from above — suited to tall equipment and structural steel that fits the container's length and width.

RoRo vessel for wheeled and tracked cargo
Best for wheeled / tracked cargo

RoRo Vessel

Vehicles and machinery are driven directly onto the vessel via ramp, avoiding crane handling and reducing the risk of damage. See our full RoRo shipping service for standard vehicle and rolling cargo.

Breakbulk vessel for extra-large and heavy cargo
Best for extra-large / heavy cargo

Breakbulk Vessel

Cargo is lashed directly to the vessel deck or hold for oversized loads that exceed flat rack or RoRo limits, such as industrial modules and marine vessels.

FAQ

Out-of-Gauge & Breakbulk Shipping Questions

What is out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo?
Basically, if your cargo is bigger than a standard 40ft high-cube container in any direction, it's out of gauge. That container gives you roughly 12 m of length, 2.35 m of width and 2.59 m of height to work with inside — go past any of those and you're looking at a flat rack, open top, RoRo or breakbulk solution instead of a normal box.
What is the difference between breakbulk and out-of-gauge shipping?
OOG is about size, cargo too big for a standard container. Breakbulk is about how it's loaded, piece by piece onto pallets, crates or the vessel deck itself, rather than sealed in a container. In practice the two overlap a lot: most OOG cargo ends up shipping as breakbulk, on a flat rack, or via RoRo, depending on its size, weight and shape.
What is the difference between bulk cargo and breakbulk cargo?
Bulk cargo is loose and unpackaged, grain, coal, ore, that sort of thing, poured or scooped straight into a vessel's hold. Breakbulk is the opposite in a way: individual, discrete items like machinery, vehicles or steel coils, each one handled and loaded on its own.
What size or weight makes my cargo "out of gauge"?
As a general guide, cargo is out of gauge if it is longer than about 12 m, wider than about 2.35 m, taller than about 2.59 m, or heavier than the standard container payload of roughly 26–28 tonnes. Send us the dimensions and weight of your cargo and we will confirm the right shipping method.
Which shipping method will be used for my cargo — flat rack, open top, RoRo or breakbulk vessel?
It depends on your cargo's shape and dimensions. Over-width or over-height cargo that isn't too long often ships on a flat rack container. Over-height cargo that fits the container footprint can use an open top container. Wheeled or tracked equipment usually goes by RoRo. Extremely large or heavy cargo, such as industrial modules or marine vessels, is shipped as breakbulk, lashed directly to a vessel deck or hold.
How is breakbulk cargo loaded and secured onto the vessel?
It goes on piece by piece, using cranes, ramps or specialised trailers depending on what it is and which vessel it's going on. Once it's aboard, it gets lashed to fixed points on the deck or in the hold so it can't shift during the voyage, all worked out in a lashing plan before loading even starts.
Which ports do you ship out-of-gauge and breakbulk cargo from?
From China, we ship out of Tianjin, Shanghai, Dalian, Lianyungang, Xingang, Qingdao, Shekou and Nansha to major ports across Africa, the Middle East, Europe and beyond. From the Gulf, we ship out of Jebel Ali (Dubai) and Saudi ports including Jeddah, Dammam and Yanbu to major ports across Africa.
Which ports and regions do you cover?
China-origin shipments cover major ports across Africa (including Libya, Egypt, Morocco, Djibouti, Port Sudan, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Lagos, Durban and Beira), the Middle East, Europe (including Antwerp, Belgium), and the Americas (Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia and beyond), plus South Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania on request. Dubai and Saudi Arabia-origin shipments cover major ports across Africa.
What documents are needed for an OOG or breakbulk shipment?
Typical requirements include a commercial invoice and packing list with cargo dimensions and weight, a bill of lading, and export/import customs declarations, plus a certificate of origin where required. Oversized loads usually also need a cargo survey or lashing certificate. Some African destinations, including Nigeria and Kenya, require a pre-shipment inspection certificate to verify the goods before export. Our team prepares and checks this documentation as part of the booking process.
Is my cargo insured during breakbulk or OOG shipping?
We can arrange or advise on cargo insurance for high-value or sensitive shipments if you need it. Given how much handling oversized cargo goes through, we'd recommend it for most OOG and project cargo moves.
What are the advantages of breakbulk shipping?
You can ship oversized or heavy cargo without taking it apart first, which saves the time and cost of disassembling and rebuilding it at the other end. Breakbulk vessels can also call at smaller ports the big container ships can't reach, and your cargo moves as its own unit instead of getting consolidated with everyone else's.
Are there any drawbacks to breakbulk shipping?
It costs more than standard container shipping, and it's more labour-intensive to load and secure since every piece gets handled on its own rather than sealed into a box once. Sailings are also less frequent than container lines run, so it's worth planning lead times early rather than booking last minute.
How long does breakbulk or OOG shipping take from Dubai or China?
Transit time depends on the destination port, vessel schedule and shipping method used. Breakbulk and OOG vessels typically sail less frequently than standard container lines, so lead times can be longer — contact us with your route for an accurate transit estimate.
How do I get a quote for out-of-gauge or breakbulk shipping?
Send us your cargo dimensions, weight, pickup location and destination port via WhatsApp or the quote form on this page, and our project cargo team will confirm the right equipment and a shipping quote.
What is the difference between project cargo and breakbulk shipping?
Breakbulk is about how the cargo is loaded, piece by piece, no container. Project cargo is the bigger picture: the whole logistics job for a large or complex shipment, usually for infrastructure, energy or industrial work, that might use breakbulk, OOG, RoRo and standard containers all in the same move.
Do you offer door-to-door out-of-gauge and breakbulk shipping?
Yes. Alongside port-to-port breakbulk and OOG freight, we can arrange pickup from the manufacturer or factory in China, inland trucking, export customs clearance and onward delivery to the final destination, depending on the route and cargo type.
